Perfect for gatherings, game days, or simply as a savoury snack, this guacamole dip will transport your taste buds south of the border. Let's dive into the art of creating this timeless favourite.

Derived from the Nahuatl term "ahuacamulli," wherein "ahuacatl" means "avocado," and "mulli" translates to "sauce" or "stew," the term "guacamole" has its roots. This iconic dish ranks among the most effortless Mexican recipes to prepare.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped white onion
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper, seeds and membranes removed, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Tortilla chips, to serve

Instructions:

  1. Cut each avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh into a mixing bowl. (you can use a regular spoon to help you on this process)
  2. Mash the avocado using a fork or potato masher until you achieve your preferred level of creaminess. You can use a molcajete (traditional style) or a regular bowl. Leave it slightly chunky for added texture.
  3. Squeeze the juice of one lime over the mashed avocado to prevent browning and infuse a zesty kick.
  4. Add the diced tomato, finely chopped red onion, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro to the mashed avocado.
  5. For a gentle heat, finely chop the jalapeño pepper after removing its seeds and membranes. Adjust the amount according to your spice preference.
  6. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  7. Gently fold all the ingredients together until well combined, ensuring the flavours meld harmoniously.
  8. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed, adding more lime juice, salt, or pepper according to your preference.

Serving and Presentation:

  • Transfer the guacamole dip to a serving bowl.
  • Garnish with additional chopped cilantro, sliced jalapeño, and a pinch of red pepper flakes for an extra burst of colour and flavour.
  • Serve with tortilla chips, fresh vegetable crudités, or alongside your favourite Mexican dishes.

Cook's Tips:

  • To select perfectly ripe avocados, look for those that yield slightly when gently pressed. Avoid overly firm or overly soft avocados.
  • If you prefer a milder guacamole, remove the membranes and seeds from the jalapeño before chopping.
  • For an added layer of complexity, consider adding a dash of smoked paprika or a sprinkle of ground coriander.
